This year the Durham at War team invites members of the public to join our volunteers at the third and final Durham at War conference, marking another successful year for our HLF-supported First World War project 'Durham at War'. With the 1914-18 centenary soon drawing to a close, we are offering a lively programme of talks, displays, film previews and our very own Poppy Bake Off competition to highlight County Durham's special contribution to the nationwide commemorations over the past four years.Speakers include one of the UK's most exciting military historians, Andy Robertshaw, who was historical adviser to Steven Spielberg on the blockbuster film 'War Horse'. Andy's conference talk is titled 'Unexpected Victory: How did the Great War really end?'Authors, historians, archaeologists and volunteers will share their research into the identification of bodies recently recovered from a battlefield of 100 years ago, medical provision during the Battle of the Somme, women at war and new techniques for uncovering First World War archaeology. There is a small charge to cover refreshments and buffet lunch on the day.
